Solid Waste Transfer Station Modifications, Middletown, CT
HRP provided comprehensive services necessary to modify an existing 250-ton per day (tpd) transfer station, shown in the photo below, to a 750-tpd facility. A parallel operation was established in an adjacent building. The modification has allowed the owner to operate in a far more efficient manner by providing segregated transfer operations for incoming MSW and bulky waste.
We prepared the engineering drawings for conversion of a 7,200 square foot portion of the adjacent building into a parallel 250-ton per day facility. Building improvements included a tipping floor, push wall, and sub-grade loading bay. Site improvements included installation of a 1,000-gallon oil/water separator to treat drainage from the loading bay, followed by an effluent pump station and 200 feet of sanitary sewer. Because the site is highly developed and experiences intense use, truck access, traffic routes and turning radii were important considerations that were successfully incorporated into the site planning.
We worked with City officials to obtain site plan approval and prepared documents for submittal to CTDEEP for a solid waste facility permit, a wastewater discharge permit, and updated the facility Operation & Maintenance Plan, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan. All necessary permits were obtained.
