Environmental Remediation Oversight, Waterbury, CT
HRP provided on-site construction and engineering inspection, and facilitating the project through completion. Spot decisions regarding any “hot spots” encountered and material handling practices were made continually at the side of the excavations by our inspectors. They were also responsible for tracking of waste as it left the site, confirming excavation volumes by contractors for pay items, and coordinating with the various trades working on the site with respect to environmental health and safety. To date, the upland soil remediation component of the project has been completed, and school is in session. Currently, we are involved in the groundwater monitoring and remedial design for the on-site regulated wetland.
The designated site is an eight acre parcel in a historically highly industrialized area. Historical site use included bulk petroleum storage, metal manufacturing, chrome plating, a bottling facility, gasoline filling stations, automotive repair facilities, dry cleaners, and an off-site electrical substation.
The remedial objectives at the site included removal of approximately 43,000 tons of polluted fill and an additional 10,000 tons of PCB-impacted soil. Once removed, the remaining material at the surface of the site was covered with a clean fill and/or pavement cover system to prevent exposure and bring the site into compliance with residential standards appropriate for a school.
