In technical organizations, the spotlight naturally falls on the work itself — the projects completed, the problems solved, the results delivered to clients. But behind every successful project is a team ensuring that the business side of the business actually works.

Administrative Professionals Day is a chance to shift the spotlight. As CEO Dan Titus puts it, the role administrative professionals play goes far beyond keeping things organized.

“With any professional services firm, whether lawyer, doctor, engineer, accountant, there tends be a focus on the technical practice – whatever that may be. Often I think the business of the business gets lost. The administrative side of the house is really the business. It’s not just that they keep it running – that’s true – but in many ways they don’t just keep it running but make it run.”

That distinction matters. “Keeping something running” sounds like maintenance. What administrative professionals actually do is much more dynamic.

“The administrative staff is kind of our operators,” Dan says. “They aren’t the technical operators, but they are the business operators. Without them, this business ceases to exist. It’s an important function we can’t live without.”

Think about everything that allows HRP’s engineers and environmental professionals to do their work: licensing requirements, legal documentation, insurance coverage, benefits administration, reporting obligations, and countless operational details that must be handled accurately and on time. It’s the administrative side of the house that keeps everything moving, and over time, the role has only grown more complex.

As HRP has expanded across multiple states, administrative teams manage a growing patchwork of regulations and requirements. Employment laws, benefits structures, licensing standards, and corporate filings all vary from state to state, and staying on top of them requires constant attention. For example, employee leave policies may differ dramatically depending on location. It’s detailed work. It’s often invisible. But it has an impact every single day.

Administrative professionals are the ones who catch something before it becomes a problem, streamline a process that saves time for everyone, or keep dozens of moving pieces aligned so the business can operate smoothly. Their commitment shows up in the small moments that make a big difference. Which is exactly why this day exists.

“These folks deserve some sunshine,” Dan says. “In a technical business, we’re constantly talking about the projects. We highlight them, and the projects get the sunshine and flowers. Because the administrative role isn’t the technical role it always sort of stands just behind the curtain. It supports and makes it all possible, but it doesn’t get the same kind of sunshine.”

Administrative Professionals Day gives us the perfect reason to pull back the curtain.

“It’s a reminder of how essential the role is,” Dan adds. “A compelling reason to note it and make sure the people who make it all possible get the recognition they deserve.”
