Making Movies: A Career Evolution at HRP

October 5th, 2020 by Tom Simmons

It used to be the case that there were no pictures of me. Being in front of the camera was just about the only thing I hated more than being behind it. So when I started as a Corporate Marketing Administrative Assistant at HRP, I was less than thrilled to become the designated company photographer. At the time I barely knew how to take a photo on my phone, let alone use a thousand dollar piece of professional photography equipment. But working at HRP means you are never defined by your limitations, but by the temerity of your ambitions. In other words, we all punch above our weight at HRP.

So in the best sense of that tradition, I taught myself how to use that camera.

That experience prepared me for the latest opportunity I have working at HRP, our YouTube Channel.

It must have been back in 2008, maybe earlier, that I started watching YouTube regularly. In those days it seemed like anyone with a creative spark could get their vision out to the world. The closer you followed your favorite creators the more behind the scenes content you got to see. More than a decade later I was well prepped with production knowledge.

It’s one thing to be a fan, but the technical details of production? How do you do that?

Like so many of us these days, I turned to the most powerful learning resource going, YouTube. I went through video after video, learning about lighting, sound design and sound editing, screenwriting, how to edit in Adobe Premiere Pro, how to acoustically treat a studio space, and much more.

While I am still very much an amateur, I am incredibly proud of the work we’ve done to create the videos you will see on HRP’s channel and just as grateful to the actor’s willing to get in front of the camera for someone clearly figuring things out on the fly. Together we are going to regularly post videos that are informative and fun, showcasing the unique expertise and personality of HRP. When you subscribe to the channel you will get a unique insight into what makes HRP the best firm to hire and the best company to work for.
